Austin Alumnae members have hosted financial and home ownership workshops to inform interested members of the Austin community. Also, career counseling and professional apparel assistance has been provided to young women exploring employment opportunities.
Early Childhood Literacy program is a local initiative to support reading skills in Austin Independent School District. Two schools, Campbell Elementary and Sims Elementary, will receive services through mentors and reading materials for students in kindergarten through third grade. Members of Austin Alumnae chapter and community volunteers will provide individual attention to students weekly as a way to build a more literate community.
Delta Academy is a national headquarter initiative program that prepares young girls (ages 11-14) for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century. Sessions for Delta Academy are held on Saturdays with a focus on technology, self-esteem and etiquette workshops, field trips and interactions for science experiences and college exposure, and special outings to engage the girls in culture, history, and the arts. Occasional events will also be scheduled on designated days throughout the school year.
Delta GEMS is also a national headquarter initiative program that provides the frame work to address specific tasks that develop a "CAN DO" attitude among girls aged 14-18. Sessions for Delta AGEMS are held on Saturdays. The Delta GEMS framework is composed of five major components (Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service, and Infinitely Complete), forming a road map for college and career planning. The goals for Delta GEMS are:
To instill the need to excel academically;
To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures high school and beyond; and
To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence), a national headquarter initiative program which is designed to refocus the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., with the support and action of other major organizations, on the plight of African-American males (ages 13-17). Both informal and empirical data suggests that a number of African-American males continues to be in crisis and have not reached their fullest potential educationally, socially and emotionally. EMBODI is designed to address these issues. EMBODI will include a program format and information template delivered through a series of Saturday sessions. Occasional events will also be scheduled on designated days throughout the school year.
Through fundraising efforts of the chapter, Austin Alumnae awards scholarships to deserving young women who are graduating from high school each year. There is an application process for the yearly scholarships. A special event is planned for the scholarship winners to recognize their accomplishments and present awards.
Our service support children in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Specifically, in Africa we have provided school supplies for the impoverished children in the West African country of Ghana. Through our service at a local Artisan store we are able to provide assistance to villages in Asia and Latin America. The United States military forces serving in the Middle East have also benefited from our public service commitment.
Our members volunteer in various positions at election polls throughout the Austin community. Voter registration assistance is provided for eligible citizens new to Austin and for people who have never registered.
Our chapter continues to participate in community involvement programs such as the Relay for Life (cancer awareness), the March of Dimes and the Health Fair in conjunction with a local church. We also support the Arts in the Austin community.
